recycled from another post .... here's how the DEC answers 2020 EHD in 3m by adding another early hunting season and increasing the doe permits from 36k to 40k ..... I wouldn't expect too much from them except for the same recycled news story they use explaining EHD and the low impact .... also recycled from another post the image shows how the current deer plan calls for a greater than or equal 25% reduction in the deer herd in the HUDSON VALLEY and whether that's by bullet or disease it doesn't really matter to the DEC ....
https://dos.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2021/09/090121.pdf
“. A few writers objected to inclusion of WMU 3M due to deer mortality from Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) in that unit in 2020.”
“WMU 3M did experience some localized deer mortality from EHD in 2020, but subsequent deer harvest patterns suggest the disease did not ap[1]pear to substantially affect the unit’s overall deer population. The manage[1]ment objective for 3M is to reduce the population. For that to occur, ad[1]ditional antlerless harvest is necessary.”

Thanks Grazan
I don't know if the dec realizes the impact EHD has had on the deer herd here in 3J and surrounding areas ..I'm sure I have lost 60% of my local deer herd here and around my property.. maybe more ...
We found 7 dead in just 2 days ....then we have had some infected, all hunched over , barely able to walk , their mouth hanging wide open ... the stench of death was strong ...
I would like to see the dec announce some updated information about this situation..

Muskrat .... I waited for the same last year and the only thing the DEC did was offer more 3m DOE tags in Nov ..... dont expect any info from the DEC except how "localized" the infected areas are and "very little" impact ..... all of which is far from the truth when your walking in the woods tripping over dead deer like i did last year ... the DEC never even returned a single phone call of mine when I told them about the 5 i found in 10 minutes .......

I’m up to 7 dead deer on our property with out looking for them but according to the outdoor news DEC says only 65 reports of EHD cases so far our head biologist says it’s very localized and shouldn’t have a big effect on our deer herd very interesting

They’re disconnected with reality. I reported over 70 last year on a couple properties, between Putnam/lower Dutchess and central Orange. Everywhere in between those properties were hit with EHD, some places more than others. Their final estimate was 1500, which means I personally found a significant portion of that, without putting much effort into it...
The only thing that might have me believe it’s just gross incompetence on their part, is that I mentioned EHD in southern Dutchess on another forum, and how bad it was getting. A couple members there thought I was making it all up, and used the fact that their friend, who works for the state, and is in charge of monitoring the deer herd in westchester/Putnam was totally unaware of EHD.. this was after well over a hundred were reported in the cold spring area..
According to the DEC almost every deer that dies from EHD is reported.. they’re not taking into account the tens of thousands of acres where deer are dying by the hundreds, without anyone knowing or caring to report..
I get it, there’s nothing they can do about it, and in a lot of ways it’s beneficial to the environment
BUT they shouldn’t be pulling the wool over our eyes, by saying it’s not a big deal, and grossly underreporting, the actuality of the mortality.

Well said yotehntr , my sediments exactly...
They say only what they want you to believe...
Why are they not reporting the severity of this EHD disease..?
Are they afraid license sales will go down ?
What's up DEC , where are you !!!!

The agency is either too big too care, to bureaucratic to take action or they see it as population control. Either way, the way they act ignorant to it is concerning. They are supposed to be the experts...

Well said Yotehntr. I know of two areas where over 100 deer were found. The 1500 estimate is bulloooo in my opinion. The DEC has failed in all attempts to increase hunter #s. And most other things they've done for hunters. This will be no different.

i know i sound like a broken record but as pointed out their numbers from last year are fake news ... maybe if they at least plotted the info on a map and showed the data id believe something but i know the dead ones i reported weren't taken into consideration .... so whos to say what the truth is this year .... we all say there's nothing that can be done about EHD but yet the DEC marches forward with expanded hunting seasons and higher permit quotas in heavy impacted areas .... that to me is ignoring reality ...... someone commented they don't need to see "40 deer" well last year there were times I didn't see a single deer and i estimate 60 - 80% of the deer herd i was watching was wiped out and i can say that because i lived in the woods from October till December and never seen a single DEC employee .... i don't think the area will ever return to where it was and if it gets hit again this year that'll stop any recovery dead in my hunting years left there .... in my opinion all the DEC had to do was keep permits and seasons the same in the hard hit areas (3m) and i would've quit my whining but to do the exact opposite doesn't appear to me an organization protecting a resource or promoting a recovery not in touch with reality ......

below is an article in todays paper ..... nothing new except another number .... 157 .... the author always seems to provide good outdoor info ....
https://www.recordonline.com/story/sports/recreational/2021/09/01/epizootic-hemorrhagic-disease-zombie-deer-dutchess-ulster/5673027001/
"Zombie deer disease: Dutchess, Ulster at center of New York's EHD problems
Bill Conners
Outdoors
I was hoping that early reports of epizootic hemorrhagic disease would prove to be wrong. Unfortunately, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation, as of this past Saturday there were 157 reports of dead deer being found in the region.
Testing of tissue samples from a few of the deer have revealed eight confirmed cases of EHD, three negative cases, and three cases yet to be determined. The problem is concentrated in Dutchess and Ulster counties; so far Ulster is bearing the brunt of it. I think the best we can hope for now is that it doesn’t have the same impact on the deer herd as it did last year before the little critters spreading the disease were killed by frost.
I have received a few calls, but not at the same pace as they came last year. The next few weeks should reveal how bad it will be this year.
EHD, often referred to as the "zombie" deer disease, is transmitted to an animal host by the Culicoides midges. They are tiny biting flies most commonly known as “no-see-ums” or gnats and are smaller than mosquitoes and other flies.
EHD primarily affects white-tailed deer and can cause significant mortality where and when it appears.Outbreaks have previously been reported in New York in 2007, 2011, and in 2020. The last outbreak generated about 1,500 calls to DEC about dead deer.
There is no treatment for EHD in wildlife populations and no prevention plan currently exists.
Clinical signs in white-tailed deer usually begin approximately seven days after infection with the virus. They may have reduced appetite, weakness, and loss of fear of humans. Fever and edema are common and deer with EHD often have a swollen head, neck, tongue, or eyelids. Infected deer die quickly, usually within eight to 36 hours.
Hunters should not harvest or consume any deer showing signs of illness even though EHD is not known to infect humans.
If you find dead deer with no obvious signs of trauma, DEC encourages you to contact the Region 3 Office of DEC in New Paltz. Call the wildlife information line at 845-256-2098 or the Environmental Conservation Officer line at 845-256-3013."
