Don't really know. Do know that region 3 is on list of areas. Which was hit hard by EHD, but nothing DEC does anymore surprises me. Info is on DEC website.

Here is a bit more info:

https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/p12deerbearris.pdf

https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/p12deerbearexpressterms.pdf

There's a lot to unpack in these proposals, much more than just the nine day September firearms season. It also looks like we may see shooting hours for big game expanded to half an hour before dawn to half an hour after sunset. There are more blaze/fluorescent proposals as well, including to possibly have to wear blaze/fluorescent colors while waterfowling! Those who waterfowl know this is ludicrous...but those who make the laws don't know anything about waterfowling.

The public comment period is open through August 8th.

I am a big fan of extending the hunting hours to match how most other states do it.  Opening morning it is no surprise people start shooting half hour (or more) before current legal hours and it would great for us law abiding hunters to not have to question our own ethics every opening morning.

As for the gun season I have no properties to gun hunt (besides the gunks and I'd rather that public land be re-designated as no DMPs).  Not easy or even possible in 3m to go door to door and get to know anybody to hunt their land.  Just don't have the time or connections.  I am all for the state looking for extending opportunities though because lets remember this is what we want instead of the state attempting to do any sterilization projects like they do or propose on Staten Island. Whether or not there is a deer issue in certain sections of these WMUs is debatable but we have to give the state credit for trying to use hunters to combat the issue.

I will most likely be more focused on trying to fill my bear tag in sept but if I had the opportunity I'd love to get my freezer started in sept with a doe.

Do they really think the deer herd will return to normal patterns after a 9 day gun hunt?  That statement alone shows how detached they are with reality

the only thing that matters is their graphic from the current deer plan showing a 25% deer decrease in the Hudson valley region .... whether by bullet or disease it doesn't matter ......

I agree it seems like the dec has never had a good idea of how to manage deer like we feel they should but how many people actually give them the information they need and when asked for

I believe DEC opens stuff to public input to passify the sportsmen. I also believe that little if any of public comment is taken into consideration. Just my opinion.

I totally agree!! I've responded many times over the years when the DEC wanted the publics input. In recent months I responded twice, once on the new proposed trout fishing rules and another on the deer management plan. Didn't hear back on either e-mail. I feel it falls on deaf ears!

That is a fact.

Second, yes deer will return to their pattern, if they even get out of it, after a 9 day season. It's not like people are going to be hammering the woods in 80 degree weather in September.  I dont understand it. With all the complaints of low deer herds youd think 9 extra days to get something would be welcomed by most.

I really can’t see the logic behind this NY already has one off the longest season in the country there is plenty of opportunities to harvest deer in this state

It’s been my experience that when people complain about low deer herd #’s, they want pressure taken off the herd, not more added..How much time do hunters need for an opportunity? We have months to fill a tag. If they want the herd reduced, work on incentivizing access to private and urban
Land, where their perceived overpopulation problem exists.
