DEC to mandate circle hooks for striped bass
« on: January 13, 2021, 10:05:36 AM »
Hudson River and Marine District anglers should be aware that the Department of Environmental Conservation will be imposing the use of circle hooks in time for the 2021 recreational striped bass fishing season, which opens April 1.

I dont like them for chunk fishing in river. Fore live herring there ok or drifting worms. I use them drifting eels in montauk they work great.

You have to learn how to use them .... I have a problem with them because I set the hook ..
Your supposed to just let the fish swim away and apply drag ...

I've lost some nice fish to circle hooks , but they do increase survival rate on released fish...
you cook good rabbit pilgrim

I don't get up at 4 AM to play catch and release .

I'm a lazy fisherman and always let the STRIPERS set the hook and have no bad experiences with circle hooks which I've been using for years on the Hudson …. I always tell my passengers "let the striper set the hook"

I tried them for stripers not nearly as effective as j hooks just happy not to have to worry about it anymore as I will now be on fingerlakes chasing big trout

My lifetime biggest striper came on a circle hook, and I've used them from time to time and they do work, you just have to get used to them and they definitely don't get gut hooked - make sure the point is exposed on whatever bait you're using.

I always used big j hooks 9/0 10/0 for live bait 8/0 for chunk so for me would be the same .
