Tracking deer in the Catskills
« on: December 19, 2020, 01:32:26 PM »
Anyone have consistent success tracking down bucks in the Catskills? Last couple years I’ve been interested in big woods tracking Larry Benoit style, but just don’t know if Catskills are really suitable for that type of hunting.

I know, unless real deep, theres a good chance local, of pushing a deer in front of another hunter’s gun

I have tried the last few years when we've had snow but a lot of times the tracks lead right to laurels and it gets tough to follow. I did shoot my last 2 bucks still hunting large chunks of public (large relative to this area, not Maine/NH). There was no snow but found hot sign.  Next year I am going to plan some days off again late season to keep trying. I am a fan of the Big Woods Bucks podcast and that is where I got really interested in trying it and still hunting. Another good one for hunting mountainous terrain is East Meets West if you're interested in podcast

I got a good workout today in these old snowshoe’s that have been collecting dust for years. I saw about 6 deer during my trek. Nothing within range. Until next year

Congratulations Ron. This “season ending” has been quite productive with all the snow that’s hit the ground.
