Wood heat
« on: December 19, 2019, 04:33:44 PM »
I feed a outdoor wood boiler 3x a day to heat my 3000 square foot house ..
With these temperatures, I push a lot of wood thru the boiler ..
I'll burn 10-11 cord of wood / 6 month heating season ...
My set temperature in the house is 71..
I'll bet , I'm not the only one having all this fun ...!

After 10 years of feeding the wood boiler 13-15 cord i took a break this year and only using it to heat my shop.. I put a arm full of wood in it every other day now..lol  Just got a fuel oil bill yesterday and boy do i think im going to regret this decision.

Nothing like mid 70s in the house when it's so cold out the snot freezes in your nose.

I have been in and around the wood business all my life. My homes, even as a kid, have been heated with wood. It is with out a doubt a lot of strenuous work but good healthy work if conducted properly. I have always loved to cut wood provided I had the time .

Lately time has been at a premium and so cutting 10-12 cords of wood for a yearly supply has become a sleight strain on this 63 year old body. Partly my fault for not getting at it sooner because my mindset thinks I’m 40 and still full of piss and vinegar. This next season I’ll start sooner.....I think!

The reward in the end is a house that stays a constant 70 degrees and every room is a even heat. No cold spots, no crazy hot spots and no dirt and dust. It’s all outside at the wood pile next to the wood boiler. I feed it twice a day and in turn it feeds a constant 170* water temp to my shop, house and domestic hot water.

I do have a oil fired burner in my house but it doesn’t fire off because it thinks it’s internal hot water is already hot so it just circulates to the baseboards heating all the rooms to 70*.

So when my son and I get in from a cold day of hunting or ice fishing, even a slamming cold day at work, having that warm air hit you in you face when coming in the door is all too worth the effort of 10-12 cords of wood.
By the way, my wife is a happy woman with all that warmth!

I heat my 3000 sq ft log cabin with a RSF high efficiency fireplace. It is a good compromise between a wood stove and a fireplace. We could not imagine living in a log cabin without a fireplace. I have a fan and duct work in the basement which blows heat from the fireplace to vents on the other side of the house. That fan is  controlled by a thermostat. I like it warmer than my wife does so I normally sit near the fire and my wife uses the thermostat to control the heat (or lack of heat) where she likes to sit.

Anyway, I burn an average of eight cords a year, less if it is all oak. I buy log length and cut and split it. I still use some oil to help keep the upstairs bedrooms warm because I have small children living with me.

I have a little wood stove that has such a strong draft it burns wood as fast as like an outside campfire.  My smoke pipe goes straight up through the ceiling and roof and that's part of the problem, I've tried putting in four 90 degree elbows and return it to the straight up part but the draft is still strong once it gets going.  Of course I've tried every damper and air intake adjustments I can make.  I do use it on some cold evenings - but mostly use it on weekends for warmth and ambiance while watching football and organizing, lubricating, & cleaning fishing gear.  I actually make foil wrap meals in it sometimes (Hobo dinners I call it) and I've simmered soup on top of it too for a slow cook.  I go through about what I guess is 1 chord a year.  I keep my eye out for pallets and tear them down for fire wood and also the slats split up nice for kindling.
