« on: April 19, 2026, 07:48:44 AM »

A friend of mine is having a major problem with beavers damming up his creek . . . .he cleans out patches to let the water flow, then the beavers replug the patches again. He's looking for someone to come in and trap them . . .He lives on RT-9G in Hyde Park . . .  Any thoughts or help would be appreciated
Please P.M. me  . . .Thanks

I have an area on the lower part of our property that the beavers flooded.  I filled out the form on the DEC site and got a Nuisance Beaver Permit.  It was actually pretty simple, and it allows me to deal with the problem myself, which I've been doing.  Per the permit, you can shoot them whenever you want, but if it is not within the normal season, you're supposed to dispose of the carcass, not do anything else with it.
I was pretty pissed about it when I first noticed the area flooding, as it happened in an area that was good deer hunting land before the beavers flooded it.  but it seems that the deer movement is now almost funneled into an area where my neighbor put up a two-man stand.  I have a trail camera near there that shows a lot more activity now than before the beavers did their thing.
Beavers are more active mornings and evenings, and they know when the dam is leaking, so you can use those to your advantage in getting rid of them.

When you apply for the nuisance beaver permit, there are three "levels" of permit that you can get.  First level is to allow lethal removal of beavers.  Second level is to allow lethal removal of beavers, and the breaching or removal of a beaver dam no more than 2 years old.  Third level is more of a permit issued to a corporate entity or a business to deal with beavers on more of an ongoing way, citing things like keeping culverts clear and things like that.  I got the second level, which is issued to a specific landowner (me), and is effective for that calendar year.
I'm actually submitting for this year's permit now.
