You guys need to leave cameras out all year and try to get a feel for numbers compared to past numbers

Truth is NYS is a joke when it comes to deer management. They have never listened to hunters and never will.

Got curious so went to check for EHD at my property today. Found 2 dead within a few feet of a small pond immediately. Sad to see what this is going to do to the population

I heard from another guy near you who told me they really got hammered. He told me that’s all you smell is dead rotting carcasses. Sucks!

Apparently it’s in Oswego county, here’s a screenshot from Facebook, the author had the deer tested by Cornell university and came back as positive for EHD.

EDH is no joke and a bad deal!  As far as deer and other animals being in one feeding pattern and changing overnight to another it happens fast and people often wonder what happened to the 3 deer that they have been watching like clockwork. Take it from someone that has a few apple trees in his backyard, when a better food choice for the animals presents itself they will change and move overnight.  I have seen years with no acorns when you can't find one drop on the orchard floor and when an apple falls it will be gone by the next morning, other years when we are chopping drops to clean up the orchard. Bears in the trees every night until the wild cherry ripen or beach nut or acorns  are ready.  We are all wanting answers and are quick to point fingers like the damm farmer in Orange bringing in hay to feed his cows from out of state (how dare he stay in business and feed his herd) or the state issuing too many permits but the real deal is that this is bigger than any of us has control over.  Insects are vectors of many pathogens; malaria, lime, black plague, heartworm to name a few.  EDH will have to be stopped when the first frost hits and the bug gets frozen. We can talk about it til we are blue in the face but it will not change the course of this pathogen one bit.  Please stay healthy, eat well and take care of your families and friends.

Nobody, is pointing fingers at farmers..people just want more communication from the official experts. The lack of deer from changing food patterns, is not what’s happening. Although, that’s probably something that they will say this year, when they issue another round of doe permits, in 3J

Appleman, when you are finding the dead deer, it’s not that they changed a food source. Down in accord, stone ridge and high falls it stinks of rotting carcasses, they are dying heavy. It’s disgusting, nothing touches the rotting carcasses except for maggots 🤮

Two local papers had a write up today ..
Shawangunk journal and blue stone press
I felt these were well written, and at least makes
more people aware of this situation ...

Maybe DEC could hire college kids to do field surveys ,
Just walk the streams, or kayak the creeks ..
I just don't think they have a realistic idea on the impact this EHD is having on the deer here ..

They still are handing out management permits and nuisance permits in these hard hit areas ..

Come on frost ... still going to be late October/early November..
you cook good rabbit pilgrim

I don't get up at 4 AM to play catch and release .

Deer-killing disease spreads in Mid-Hudson Valley, state confirms

State notes 700 dead deer reports, with confirmed cases in Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia and three other counties

TOWN OF ULSTER, N.Y. – The state has received reports of approximately 700 dead deer since July, and has confirmed cases of a lethal bug-transmitted disease in Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia and three other counties, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation on Thursday.

The other counties with confirmed cases are Nassau, Oswego, Suffolk, the DEC said in an announcement. The department did not provide a breakdown of cases by county.

Additionally, the state agency said that it is tracking suspected cases in nine other counties, Albany, Jefferson, Oneida, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Sullivan, and Westchester.

State officials in a press release said that Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, which is spread to deer from midge bites, has become significant in the Hudson Valley because the deer population has not built an immunity to it.

“The disease is not spread from deer to deer and humans cannot be infected by deer or bites from midges,” they wrote.

Early last month, the department had confirmed two white-tailed deer in the town of Esopus died after contracting Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease.

In the town of Ulster, officials are working to make sure that people are familiar with state guidance on the deer-killing disease, which is not transmitted to humans.

Town of Ulster Supervisor James Quigley said there have been six calls reporting dead deer on private property over the past several weeks.

“Most of them were (asking) for the Highway Department to remove the dead deer from the front yard,” he said.

Quigley said the municipality can only remove the deer if it is in the highway right-of-way.

“You are going to have to call a private entity to have the deer removed,” he said.

The state agency said that, “EHD outbreaks do not have a significant long-term impact on regional deer populations, but deer mortality can be significant in small geographic areas.” It added, “EHD is endemic in the southern states, which report annual outbreaks, so some southern deer have developed immunity. In the northeast, EHD outbreaks occur sporadically and deer in New York have no immunity to this virus.”

Officials note that the disease leaves deer dehydrated, which is why they have often found to have died near water sources such as ponds or pools.

“Folks with ponds are experiencing regular finds of carcasses,” Town of Saugerties Supervisor Fred Costello said earlier this week. “Animals that are suffering the illness become very thirsty. They seek out bodies of water, and they die a short time later.”

Officials expect the outbreak will subside following the first hard frosts of autumn.

Reports of sick or dead deer can be reported to the state Department of Environmental Conservation at www.dec.ny.gov/animials/123773.html or by calling the state Regional Wildlife Office at (845) 256-3098.
