Definitely not your imagination. I saw and smelled the smoke yesterday thinking someone was burning leaves off in a distance while fishing the Neversink river. Later in the day around 7pm driving west on route 17, when you pass exit 114 looking out over the Bashakill I thought what I was seeing was a very hazy sky, didn't realize that was from the wildfires out west. That's something!
