Looking For Esopus Creek Fishermen for Article
« on: March 15, 2021, 08:39:54 AM »
Hi all -

I'm writing an article for The River Newsroom about the DEP discharging muddy water from the Ashokan Reservoir into the lower Esopus Creek. Looking to talk to anyone with experience fishing the creek to get their perspective.

Contact Trout Unlimited or Fscuc
Not sure if the mountains are getting higher or my legs are getting shorter

Hope you rattle some feathers that place is a dump these days. Use to be the best trout stream in the state but im lucky if i fish it once a year these days. Its been 10-15 years of mud and poor fishing.. Good luck and thank you.

i will agree the fishing def aint what it was years ago prior to the increased over flow thru the portal and the species of fish has changed, Prior to early 2000's any one ever catch a white perch out of the espouse or Ashokan res??
they pumped one of the most evasive fish species ever in to the local water s

It’s a damn shame. I have lived near the lower Esopus my entire life of 44yrs. I hate what the DEP is doing to this body of water. And they keep getting away with it. Anyone else that lives near the water and wants to do any sort of construction needs silt fences, permits, etc when doing anything. We’d be fined out the a$$ if this was us. A beautiful weekend day like today and the Esopus is chocolate milk again and flowing abnormally too fast. But let’s take care of NYC and turn a blind eye again to the folks in Ulster County

Good luck Roger. Hope you can help fight the fight

Currently all the streams are running with a high degree of turbidity. Woodland valley for instance is racing and brown water is being fed into to it from all the feeders. The upper Neversink flowing past Frost Valley, churned up like never before.
There is still a tremendous amount of snowpack on the northern faces of the mountains. As of Friday between Winisook and the Slide mountain parking area there was 10” of snow all on the northern slopes. South facing slopes were bare. Going higher in elevation the snow gets deeper. So with all melt off yet to come plus additional rainfall this turbidity is here for a while.
As far as the Shokan reservoir is concerned that water will remain brown until the water starts to warm up. Not looking forward to that for my trout fishing this spring!
