Shot this bear this morning from the ground. I was still hunting around a state forest looking for fresh deer sign to set up in the saddle. Wasn’t seeing anything and at 930, I was taking a short break grabbing water from the pack and when I started to walk again, I noticed him about 15 yards away. There was saplings between us so I didn’t think a shot would present itself. So I tried to make my presence known but he just stood there. He was facing me pretty much straight away and I started getting nervous so I nocked one, aimed for the white patch and had as much time as I needed.  He didn’t make it 30 yards. Then the real work started but luckily I got some help from my brother and his wife and were only a long half mile with the jet sled from a minimum maintenance road where we could get the atv. Definitely a woods bear and had his winter coat. 324lbs dressed weight at the butcher

Punched my tag this afternoon at 1:15 in sullivan county. This was the third encounter I had with him since this past Tuesday. On Thursday I was blind calling and had him come in and stand 30 yds quartering towards me for about 3 minutes while he was looking for the buck that was making the call, little did he know it was me. I Past him due to the bad shot angle. This past week I was doing all day sits and noticed most of the movement was from 1 to 4. Today he came in for the last time, when he got to 25yds I let the Mathews go and double lunged him. He ran about 80 yds and crashed, no track job. I've been hunting the swamps due to the warm weather and when he came in today he had those long phragmites grass plumes hanging off his rack, pretty cool sight.
