Prospect Hill Labs - $2500?
« on: June 24, 2020, 05:14:04 PM »
Hi - New to the board. I put a deposit on a lab pup at Prospect Hill Labradors, after reading good things about Tom on here and other sites. He is now charging $2500 for a puppy - we thought it said $1500 on the website when we first started talking to him. Has anyone gotten a dog from him and willing to share how much? The dogs don't come with papers which we are fine with, but $2500 seems pricey.

That’s crazy or does the dog come trained ? I never heard of paying that much without papers.

That is a crazy price. $1500 is the going rate I have been seeing for a while although I have seen $2000. Look on WWW.Retrievertraining.net. There are some real nice litters if you are willing to travel or wait for a litter that’s closer.

I must have purchased a bargain brand yellow lab-- she only cost $500. For the 1st year around $750 has gone to my vet for meds and shots. Good food $15-20 a week. $400 to $500 training supplies/bed/kennel box/dog toys etc...  The other big cost is time.  My experience with dogs is that you usually get out of them what you put into them.  Some of my best dogs I've had in my life have been mutts that didn't cost me a dime to purchase but gave me their all.  What is a dog worth?  The answer is of course-- what ever someone will pay.  That is between the seller and buyer and is their business not mine.

Thanks everyone for the replies and input.
The pups do not come trained. I was only informed of the price change after reading the contract - I did not sign the contract.

I'm moving on to other options (and looking into the suggestions posted here, thanks again).
I agree price is something determined by buyer and seller - $2,500 may work for some folks but not me.

Glad to hear you reconsidered. I bought my first Lab for $650. She is a great dog. Unfortunately the breeder does not breed anymore. He was up near Binghampton NY.  I’ve bred her a couple times and kept pups from both litters. Constantly asked if I’m going
To breed her again. Answer is no. Her daughter
Is a good
Hunting dog but had a little bit of a mean streak that I don’t feel comfortable breeding out. Son is a nice dog. He’s only 1 year old so time will tell how he will turn out but so far he’s not bad

In my experience bloodline is everything for physical features and demeanor if your looking for somthing very specific and bloodlines cost money. I'm not a bird or waterfowl hunter so I can not speak from that aspect of things but i can speak from the aspect of my dogs have a job and that is to protect my family I'm very partial to my akitas to the point where we dont even lock the house up. My 6month old son hangs on them like a little monkey and they are by far amazing with him they sleep next to his crib every night he is never more then 5 ft from them. between the 2 of them it was almost 9k and I would do it again in the drop of a hat
