The dreaded gut shot deer
« on: November 08, 2019, 11:48:04 AM »
Welp, The stars aligned for me this am and was able to get a shot on a nice 8pt. Problem is, the arrow deflected on a branch and gut shot him. He was quartering away and the arrow looks to have 4-5" of penetration with some stomach contents on broadhead and an odor of guts. After the shot he walked about 10yds and looked around, he then walked 30yards or so and stood there. Was unable to get another shot on him and could see some guts/entrails of some sort hanging 3-4" down on other side of his body. He eventually chased off a button buck and slowly walked off out of site. I waited 30mins and made a big circle and left, don't think he heard me leave. Going to probably wait until tmrw am. What do you guys think? Dead? He was shot at 945am, shot was back and a little low.

Sounds like he should expire. Definitely if you seen entrails coming out. I bet he’s dead before tonight. Good luck man I hope it all works out for you.

There was something hanging out I’m guessing that’s all it could be, think I gotta wait til the am regardless, just hoping it’s a fatal hit, I’m assuming it had to puncture something being there’s a small amount of stomach contents and an odor

I would go back at 3pm and get your dead deer ....
I'm not a big fan of leaving them over night ...
If you jump him , then back out , and go in the morning..
Was there a blood trail ?

I don't get up at 4 AM to play catch and release .

I would definitely go take a look this afternoon, before the yotes find him. With this wind you could probably get in quietly.

Deer will definitely die. Believe it or not I have had good success in finding gut shot deer. (not proud of the shot by any means) They usually act the same way just jump when hit and run off a few yards and slowly walk away. Usually bed down withing 150 yards and die within a couple hrs Problem is often very little to no blood.  I would go back at 3:00 that way you can slowly look ahead for him and still see without flashlight.  I wouldn't wait till morning.  Good luck man.

I just don’t want to jump him bc he can run forever here. It wasn’t a pass through either. Looks to penetrate 4” or so and fell out. Ughh terrible feeling

Give him plenty of time! Gut shot deer will die, but it sometimes takes a while.  Stomach shot can live for 8+ hours ( I know this first hand, unfortunately) and intestine shot deer can live for 24+ hours. Hes gonna die for sure, BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO PUSH HIM,  if you push him you may never see him again.  If you shot him at 945am then wait till min of 3pm before looking,  go slow, you may need to finish him. Just be patient,  you will get him!

My dad was the king of the gut shot, so I have a ton of experience. Gut shot deer 99% of the time will lay down within 100yds or so. If you wait until tomorrow morning that is exactly where you'll find him. If you go back this afternoon he will still be alive and will run off, guaranteed. Leave him be, I'd rather lose the meat to coyotes than to lose the whole deer.

3pm is too early. Give him 12 hrs min.  He will be dead nearby. If you bump him you’ could easily lose him

If for whatever reason you cannot find him, walk everywhere that there’s water
