Proper measuring

Random question that I can't seem to find in the reg, what is the proper way to measure the stripers this season in the upper Hudson?
I see Massachusetts changed from flat tail to press together tail.

 I always thought it was to keep it flat.
Nothing is ever easy!
Can someone smarter them me confirm if  geazan is correct on this.

We measure all fish with a bump board and tail squeezed game warden actually told us that's the only legal way as far as he was concerned so we all always have a bump board

The following is from the recreational saltwater fishing regulations page, https://dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/saltwater-fishing/recreational-fishing-regulations

 

Total length is the longest straight line measurement from the tip of the snout, with the mouth closed, to the longest lobe of the tail, with the lobes squeezed together, and the fish laid flat on the measuring device.
