Last Day
« on: January 01, 2025, 09:34:41 AM »
Today is the last day of the Holiday Hunt.  I'll do my usual, and spend the evening at sunset out in the woods someplace.  It'll have to be a pretty nice buck to get me to pop a cap, but ya never know, and it's a long wait until next October, so I'll give it a go.

Looks like it'll be above freezing, so that's a good start already!

I hunted yesterday, decided not to go today…I really don’t need the meat…I would only take a nice buck at this point, but also part of me thinks that they deserve to live till next year…I guess I’m getting old and soft 😂

That was pretty much my situation as well, just hoping one of the leftover bucks walked past, and even then I'm not so sure.

As it turns out, it was a warmer but damp afternoon by me, and pretty comfortable out overall.  At least up until about 4:00pm, at which time the wind picked up dramatically, and it started snowing and freezing rain.  I stayed until about 4:45, which is 15 min past sunset, but let me pick my way back out with a little light left.
Didn't see anything, not even a squirrel.

I’m kinda glad it’s over , I had a good selection of young bucks here this year as well as numerous does.
I put one nice buck in the freezer, and that was enough .. (BBQ)

Next year should see some bigger bucks ..
I hope they have a mild winter
you cook good rabbit pilgrim

I don't get up at 4 AM to play catch and release .

I did go out to find my missing flashlight where I last recovered the buck during muzzle loader .... mission complete ... flashlight found after being outside for 2 weeks and it still works ... I hate losing stuff .... happy 2025 and see u during trout, turkey and striper ..... sorry ice fishing too cold for me ....

Glad you found your light.
I walked past the little ground blind where my neighbor shot his buck on that last day, and found the other .243 case from him getting his deer.  Found the other one back in the earlier ML season before Christmas.  I'll give that to him when I see him.

Way back in the mid 1980s, me and a few friends were walking out one evening, on a farm where we had permission to bowhunt.  One guy was a gearhawk, and always had the newest, coolest stuff.  This was when all kinds of flashlights, and some other accessories, started being available in camo patterns.  The gear guy was late, so we walked over to the area where he used his climber when we hunted there.  He was crawling around in the dark, cursing about all his camo gear.  Apparently his fannypack was open and spilled out while he was lowering it with his bow, and he couldn't find his stuff.  We had our lights, so we eventually did get it all, but he had fluorescent tape on his camo stuff after that.  We laughed about that for a long time.

Hey Muskrat
Finally starting to see deer outback at my house too, last couple years they were really scarce. Not many apples on my tree this year, so none of them came up close behind the house. I did have 2 red foxes come through, the other day. First year in a quite a while that the bears didn’t dump the trash.

Glad to hear you got one for the freezer.
