Dick Henry

Sorry to say we lost a icon. Dick Henry passed on 8-11-22.  This man was a true sportsman, mentor and friend to me and so many of us around the area..Dick was a big part of this forum before he got sick aging deer, answering wildlife questions and writing wildlife articles. Dick will surely be missed by those that new him. My condolences to his family.

Little about Dick. This was his introduction to us here on newyorksportsman.com

Meet the HVS Biologist

A native of Ulster County, I was born in Ellenville and raised in a family of sportsmen. I began working for the old NYS Conservation Dept in the summer of 1967 as a seasonal laborer doing habitat improvement work on the end of a  Homelite chain saw with 24 inch bar.

Wanderlust had won out, and after high school, I headed west and attended the University of Wyoming, majoring in Wildlife Management with a focus on big game species. After graduating in 1970, I returned to work full time with the newly created NYS Department of Environmental Conservation on a variety of field projects. My family members were all die-hard deer hunters and I had longed to be a big game biologist from an early age. Over the next 30 years I was very fortunate to be able to live that dream.

For many years I was assigned to the Region 3 (New Paltz) Bureau of Wildlife, followed by a period in DEC’s Central Office Big Game programs. In 2005 I was appointed as the Region 4 Wildlife Manager working out of the Stamford and Schenectady offices. I retired from DEC in August 2008 with over 39 years of total service. Concurrent with my state career, I completed 28 years of service in the US Navy/Naval Reserve and retired as Captain in 1998.

I was most fortunate to marry a fellow wildife biologist who understood and fully supported all of my long hours, late nights and extended weekend work escapades.  We have two daughters; our oldest graduated from Dickinson College this spring and is now working at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Our youngest daughter attends American University in Washington DC. We enjoy managing our 18 acre woodlot in Stone Ridge. I enjoy even more the fact that I now have time to hunt or fish or hike whenever and as often as I want to. I also find much satisfaction afield with my 5 year old chocolate Lab.

It is my sincere pleasure to be associated with this forum.

Good hunting to all !

Dick Henry
