Lead free ammunition ??!!
« on: May 19, 2021, 03:50:02 PM »
I looked for this topic before posting and saw nothing on it.

So, I was curious if everyone is aware of the new infringement on hunting and shooting?
Evidently NY State is heading towards lead free ammo like Commiefornia! For now from what I see it's 'only' on state land, forests, DEP lands and properties that have ground water that feed NY State watersheds??
Not hard enough trying to find any ammunition for deer season now we have to try and find lead free ammunition for our slug guns and muzzleloaders!!??
Am I jumping the gun or has this been settled and it was all just a bad dream?

i did however find this article which gives us hope .. https://safariclub.org/legislation-to-ban-lead-ammo-for-hunting-see-increased-attention-in-new-york-and-minnesota/
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

Last I knew it made it through the Senate committee and is ready for a vote. The Assembly version is almost ready for a vote.

I suggest contacting your representatives ASAP and ask them for an amendment to exclude muzzle loaders and shotguns. Base your request on the notion that the low velocity projectiles from them generally do not break up into pieces and contaminate the meat nor do they spread pieces of lead around the landscape like projectiles from "deer rifles." The same argument could be made for traditional handgun cartridges (.44 magnum, .41 magnum, .357 magnum, .45 Colt, etc.) but with all the handguns shooting rifle cartridges and other high velocity ammo that would be a tough argument to make globally.

Additionally, for traditional flintlock and percussion muzzle loaders pure lead is the only option.

A case could also be made from a habitat standpoint. This is a more complex argument:  Many old rifle cartridges used for deer hunting are not available with non-lead bullets from what I could find. For example, .257 Roberts, 8 MM Mauser, .303 British, .45-70, etc., etc. If the older hunters who own those guns cannot get ammunition for them they are likely to give up hunting. Same goes for the muzzle loading hunters. In many areas the deer population has devoured the understory to the point where the woods cannot self-regenerate... Taking hunters out of those woods will lead to more destruction as outside of automobiles there aren't enough predators to control the herd size.  Voting for those bills makes the representative an anti-environmentalist.  ;)

hjeres what i got from BHA ..... I FILLED IT OUT AND sent ....

NOTE:  Sometimes when there's so much to say, you push the boundaries of the program...  Some of you experienced character limit issues when attempting to send the letter.  Well, we fixed the action alert to work within the limits some of you experienced, and we kindly ask you to please give it another shot.
Thank you very much!

Frank --
On Tuesday, June 1, the NYS Assembly placed a bill that would ban use of lead ammo on state lands, as well as NYC DEP watershed lands, just two votes away from the Governor's Desk.  With only a few days of scheduled session remaining, now is the time to urge your legislator to consider other options.

While BHA shares the goal of transitioning away from lead ammunition, our experiences in other states show that high-percentage compliance in that transition is best achieved through hunter education.  If you want to change behavior, you're going to need buy-in from the people affected, and in this case, that's the hunting community.  Education is a key component of compliance.
A ban would also likely hurt rural communities most, where access to non-lead alternatives is minimal, and comes at a premium price-point.  There is an increase in cost between budget lead ammo and non-lead alternatives, and this might affect many of us out there hunting for our own food, and may effect the numbers of us that head afield.
In addition, and as an important facet to the discussion, a DEC work group is currently engaged on this very topic, and should be allowed to finish their findings prior to any statutory enactment, so that any policy decisions are based in science. We've compiled a list of constructive options to work with policy makers within our action alert.  Through cooperative and constructive dialogue in which all interests are considered, we can work towards broad adoption of non-lead ammunition without the need for a ban. Let's speak up and present the hunting community with a leadership opportunity to showcase our commitment to the wildlife on our public lands and the resources we all share.

Thanks for everything you do to support our public lands, waters and wildlife!

This would also of course include small caliber ammo, 22 etc. Next shotguns will have to go to steel shot. Overall this will put a severe crimp in the hunting community. Forget plinking. The real reason for this is to cripple the shooting sports.

If I understand the bill correctly, it would only affect hunting. So target shooting and 'plinking' are not affected. Yet. Of course if this passes then the people who like to blame guns for all societal ills will want to ban all lead ammunition next time around.
