There are no changes to the striped bass or herring regulations at this time, according to Jessica @ the New Paltz DEC office. She said there may be a change later in May, but it remains 1 fish per day, 18" - 28". . . .The saltwater reg. changed to 1 fish per day, 28" - 31" . . . . .down from 35".
The first flush of herring have arrived . . .I brought them in with a stoolie under the Eddyville bridge earlier today . . .
. . . . . . . .LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!!!!

Jessica said the slot may be tightened. . . imagine?
Any idea if , what and when?
-
this is what Jessica (DEC) sent, which I don’t fully get . . .
Hi Ziffy,
The striper season will start as usual on April 1 with the same slot limit and there is no proposal to have the season change. We are going to have to change the regulations to keep in line with Addendum II, but the ASMFC striped bass board will be meeting to approve implementation plans at the end of this month so we aren’t for sure if our plan is approved yet. If/when it changes, it will likely be a shortening of the slot and will happen sometime in May. I will keep you posted!
I received your 2023 diary, thank you!
I’ll be sending out stuff soon so keep your eye out on the mail.
-
Thanks Ziff. what the heck could they make it 18"to 19'' slot.
-
I thought I read it was 18-26, but I can't remember the exact source offhand
-
ive posted this b4....
from all the NY DEC hearings I thought below are the options:
A. Close season in summer (removing July-August)
B. 18”-26” slot
C. 19”-27” slot with season closing early June 16th
D. 21”-28” slot with season closing early August 1st
E. 21”-28” slot with season opening later April 15th
F. Season opening May 1st
if they raise the lower limit ... its fine for me .... i cant filet anything smaller than 24" without ruining it which is why i throw anything smaller than 25" back

It looks like the striped bass regulation for 2024 will change on May 1 with an emergency regulation change to a slot limit of 23” to 28”. . . one fish per day!
This from Jessica @ NYDEC today
“ Good afternoon,
The mortality of striped bass coastwide is still too high to promote stock recovery, there are more details here if you are interested. The interstate body that regulates Striped Bass coastwide, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), has required mortality reductions in 2024.
In the Hudson River north of the GW bridge, NY proposed changing the keeper slot from 18-28” to 23-28”. This was approved by the ASMFC striped bass board on March 26th. DEC will now move forward with emergency regulations to get the new rules in place by May 1st, as required by ASMFC.
In the marine district south of the GW bridge, the reduction will be made by continuing to use the slot limit (28-31”) imposed last year.
Regulations for the opening of the Hudson River season will be the same as they were last year (keeper slot – 18”-28”). You will be notified once new regulations have been adopted by email.
I know changing mid-season is not ideal, but the timeline of review and implementation is out of our hands.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jessica”

Thanks Ziff, can’t wait to get on the water!

I’m getting tired of the dec changing the rules and regulations after the season starts …
It’s hard enough to keep up with slot limitations, J hook requirements, marine registration, etc …etc.
Then some go and get their bait license, so the can keep more herring than the next guy …
My friend took his 80 year old mother out fishing , and jigging for herring
They were checked for their credentials, and they ticketed his mother for two herring over her limit
This was on Mother’s Day 2 years ago …ridiculous !
When they ask you what your fishing for ….. tell them bullheads !!!! 8)
