Turkey Population
« on: April 13, 2023, 12:16:43 PM »
From scouting and talking to friends it looks like numbers are way down this year in Orange and Rockland Counties. Anyone else seeing the same?

Where I am, up in 4A, I've been seeing turkeys almost every day.  There's a few groups that find their way up near the house at different times, and I can see them out in other fields just walking around, doing their thing.  One group is all jakes, with little 2-4" beards, and they chase each other around a lot.  We have a few birdfeeders and there's a few hens that make that area a regular stop.
As much as the fields are nice for extended visibility, I think I'll be setting up in a few spots in the woods a bit this year.  I see lots of birds running when I do my ridearounds on the quad trails, so that's my plan right now.

The turkey population in Ulster County has been on a steady decline for the past 10+ years.

Same here. Not seeing much of anything to speak of. I talked with Dave Cree from the DEC several years ago and they were doing field counts throughout several adjacent counties. At that time i believe Ulster had the least seen. Between disease and predation its looking sparse.

Same here in Sullivan county, last 10 years or so it's getting harder to locate decent numbers of birds.
Wish the state would close the fall season.
Just my 2 cents!!

It's because of grazen ever since he bought that new call all the turkeys seem to be over in his woods now..  ;)
