Title: Old coyote
Post by: Yotehntr on December 24, 2019, 04:16:45 PM
Buddy and I had an exciting hunt this morning. We did three calling sets, using a variety of calls. (Hand calls, howls, e-call etc..) Tracks in the snow indicated that we may have called in a medium sized coyote on the second spot, but that he came in for a look, in an uncovered area.

The third set was uneventful until the end, when we had two coyotes come in after 30-35 minutes or so of calling. The lead coyote was shot at around 35 yards and the second one got away unscathed.

I didn’t weigh him, but he was in the fifty pound range. An old beat up warrior he was., with scars, broken teeth, tumors and a touch of mange to add to his character.

Way to go!! Curious on what call they came to ? as I am itching to be out and give a try of my own. Seems to be no lack of them around lately. Also wondering if ya skin them out  or .....?
Cheers

We used an open reed mouth call the last ten minutes or so of the set. The most important thing to concentrate on though, is where and how you’re setting up. They will bust you every time, If the situation is not right.

Ziff, I’ve found some ticks on them in the past, but nothing like what’s on most deer.. mange is all over the place though, so a lot of them stay in the woods. The ones that are good, I give away to trappers or get tanned.
