So if I’m reading this correctly, no more days like this then?

Yes, just be gentle take pic and release! I'm hoping we will be seeing the increase of 40 pounders being more common than the rarity it has become over last 8-10 years.

There will be plenty more days like that Matt just have to let them all go now. We have been getting plenty of fourty plus pounders over the last several years. That wont change.

I think we should get 1 or 2 any size during the whole season per person. Some kind of permit system kind of like hunting would be cool. Some people get to fish every day and of course taking one every day would put a hurting on them but some others don’t get the chance to fish as much.
Spud your way and stay on top.

Let’s just hope it makes a difference in a few years. At least regulations are changing coast wide

They are changing cost wide but NJ will still get bonus 2 fish limit on fall run. Maryland is getting 2 fish also with a higher 38" slot. 🤬 Maryland has the highest fist take of all states to the sum of 3x's what NY, RI CT and Mass remove combined!

This just passed in NJ....

Final approved motion; one striper at 28 to <38 inches (pending final ASMFC technical committee review). SBBP in NJ one at 24 to <28 with tag, to open May 15.

So does this eliminate the chance of someone setting a state record this year?

So, for me it's pretty much unchanged from what I have been doing. I use circle hooks and would only keep a small one if it was a bleeder. Over 40 always eluded me except for the anorexic one i got last year and I release anyway. At any rate good luck to all this year.

We are lucky to host a bunch of charters on the Hudson each Spring.  We have always operated as sportsmen and stewards of the resource, first and foremost.  We go above and beyond to provide an experience our clients will not soon forget, and I go to bed each night feeling we have done that.  We have had clients in the past that claimed their right to keep a 40” fish.  It is not our preference, but the vast majority of trophy fish went back, including the 51” doozie you can see in my subforum.  The new regs essentially concrete what our aims always were.   We will provide a top notch experience in catching striped bass, mostly releasing them.  Clients can keep their legal limit, or whatever they feel they’ll consume (whichever comes first) for table fare... but beyond that experience will steal the show.   All while on some of the beat outfitted vessels they’ll find.  We have a great time, and so do our friends who continue to book each year.  We support the fishery so it can allow us to do what we love.  Limited open dates available.

Thank you,
Mike

P.s.  we watched a 12 year old boy catch his first fish ever last season- a 40.5” male, and it was a slower day to that point.   Before anyone asked that young man said “please take my picture” as he struggled to hold it gently with help of our mate.  Then he smiled and said “let’s let it go” before we could even ask.  Take away what you can from a that young SPORTSMAN who has since been hooked!

Hey Oneshot, . . . . I posed this very question to the DEC about two weeks ago . . . the response I got back on Thursday the 27th was . . .

" I have been asking around and seeing if anyone has an answer or solution for this. Stay tuned!"

So,  . . .I guess we stay tuned! . . . 30 days til go time and the weather for this coming week looks above average!

Any predictions on spotting our first river herring in the Hudson????

"True Heaven can be found between the skin
and bones of a properly prepared Striped
Bass" . . .

Got Herring???
