I have all kinds of mushrooms popping up on the grassy areas that I mow, and lots of very brightly colored ones back in the woods a bit.
I need one of those phone apps that tell you what something is with a picture. My GF has one and uses it all the time. Sometimes I'll send her a picture for ID, but that just gets too complicated.

Don't trust a phone app to eat a mushroom if you want to eat them get books go with people who know and learn from them

Greensider is right. The phone apps are handy. especially for plant ID, but can be vague for mushrooms. I think there must be some liability for them in case they mis-identify a mushroom. I think they often identify them as "could be...", "might be..." They might point you in the right direction, but don't trust them if you plan on eating what you find. Like he said a field guide or a knowledgeable friend is often your best resource. It's taken me a lot of years to slowly build up the line up of mushrooms I'm 100% comfortable collecting. I often focus on one or two a season and learn them well, including "look alikes". It is a really fun hobby with great rewards. Plus another reason to spend more time in the woods!

Agree completely. I'm more interested in just identification than actual consumption.
A friend that I play pool with is a big forager and she collects and eats them often. My GF sends her pictures of what we find, and she tells us what she thinks they are. We sure as heck aren't eating them though. I'm not that kind of gambler. LOL
