Thought we would start this thread again this season.. HVS member DHenry our local biologist can age your deer here if you post clear and close up photos of your lower jaw..
Ill post the first one now..

That's an easy one, Ron.
3 1/2 years old.
Your picture is perfect. All I need to age the deer is a close-up of the grinding surfaces of the teeth on the lower jaw. The picture should be taken from the cheek side, not the tongue side.

This deer is also a 3 1/2 year old.
The molars, or grinding teeth are made up of two substances....enamel which is the white part, and dentine which is brown and resembles tooth decay, but is actually just a softer substance than the enamel.
Molars are critical for grinding browse and other vegetation before passing the pre-chewed food on through the four chambers of the digestive tract.
Typically molars on the lower jaw are worn down to the gum line by the time they are approaching 10 years old.

You're close; it's another 3 1/2 year old.

This one is 2 1/2, Muskrat.
All the molar points are still sharp and have very thin dentine lines (the brown lines sandwiched by white enamel); and there is very little wear on the cusp of the last tooth in the back.

That jaw is from a moose I shot a few years ago .
It was a young bull that came in to a cow call !

I actually didn't catch that from the picture provided. While the dentition did look a little strange, but the eruption pattern and lack of wear on the molars is very similar to young whitetails.
Wear patterns for moose at older ages are considerably different from whitetails.

I need a closer picture of the nearest jaw that takes in just the line of back teeth; the grinding surfaces are not clear enough to put an age on it from what I can see in this shot. Interestingly it looks as if it could possibly be 6 or 7 years old from what I can see now.
Same thing for the second jaw in the background; take a close-up of the row of teeth showing the grinding surfaces, don't worry about trying to get the front teeth in the picture.

Arnie,
Number 1 appears to be a 5 1/2 year old, although the wear pattern on the first and second molars is somewhat abnormal. Sometimes the upper jaw and lower jaw don't line up perfectly.
Number 2 is older; the first molar is fully cupped out and the last two molars are cupped and show heavy wear; these patterns are typical of a 7 1/2 year old.

This deer is 2 1/2 years old; the second shot shows a little abnormal wear on the first molar, however the molars are sharp and still have a thin dentine (brown) line typical of 2 1/2s .

Logic's first picture shows a solid 3 1/2; the second picture shows some abnormal wear (the first molar is low in the gum line, sometimes they have impacted food that causes this).
The wear on both of the last molars on both sides is a typical 3 1/2

There are a couple of things that can cause "elf hooves" or "sounders" as they are often called. In some cases it is the result of an extremely rich diet from crops; others think that selenium rich soil can play a role in this. It's something they can pick up from their environment.

Save your jawbones guys; We can do a couple of deer aging classes after the season if you'd like to.
I can handle up to 16 people at one time. I have a large jaw collection from local deer. I pair folks up and we start out with fawns and go all the way up to 10 1/2 year olds.
You'll probably won't remember it all, but with the handouts I provide you'll be able to figure it out. Total time is about 3 hours and there is a self-graded test at the end.
I only ask that you cover my printing costs and expenses and that runs about 8 bucks a head. You keep all the handouts.

I have not, I was honestly just guessing by the size of the deer and their weight. It was a good guess! I would love to take one of the classes and really learn how to age them though.

You're close; it's a 2 1/2; the first molar will show a little more wear when they're at 3 1/2.

The second jaw bone shows abnormal wear, especially so on the left side.
However the back molars are more consistent and has typical wear of a 3 1/2 year old deer.

Just yesterday I thought about posting that I once again would be doing on deer aging on line for HVS folks again this year.
This deer is 3 1/2 years old. While there is some subtle wear, I can't boost it up to a 4 1/2 year old. Congratulations !
For those who may wish to have their deer aged on line again this season, I need a clear, close-up shot of the lower jaw bone. It is critical to be able to see the wear patterns on the chewing surfaces of the lower jaw bone.
You can refer to some of the earlier posts that are still on the thread from last season for examples.

dick I have a question. the 2 jaw bones I just posted for you. one was much larger over all in size, atleast an inch longer and wider. the row of teeth itself was also about an inch longer. yet both same age. does that come into play at all? or is it just like people, some just got big heads?

Keep in mind that there can be considerable variation in body development, especially so during a mild winter like we had last year.
Genetics too, will play a role during the overall development of body mass; like people, some deer are simply have a larger body stature than others.
Interestingly there can be a significant difference among same age deer. I have a number of same age jaws that I use in my deer aging classes that show natural differences in jaw bone size.

Hold on to it if you have it...I'd really like to be able to see both sides clearly.
On very rare occasions you can see things that appear to be misaligned jaws, and will show funky, non traditional tooth wear.

You're right....it's not the best angle.
Looking at the partial view of the first molar, it appears to be a 3 1/2 year old, but I'd want to see a better shot from the side, not the top down view.
If you get a chance to clean it off the skull, send a side view of the lower jaw and I'll be able to confirm it for you.

There doesn't appear to be enough wear on the first molar (the fourth tooth in) to kick it up to a 4 1/2.

It's hard to make it out with this picture, Relf.
If you can, try another shot from the side view of the tooth row. It is much easier to age if your shot shows the side of the jaw, rather than a shot from above.
My gut feeling from the current picture is that it's quite young. I can't see much wear on the premolars and molars.
A straight side view shot will ace it for us.

A yearling is a year and 1/2 old. They have all their teeth on their lower jaw, with little if any wear. Your jaw was clean with almost no wear.
I'll be doing some deer aging classes again later this summer. It's not that difficult to learn the way I teach it.

This brings me to a question that I have been wondering for years. A question for Dick Henry, can a fawn grow antlers? Twice in my life I have seen what I believe to have been 6 or 7 month old deer that had antlers. In both cases they were very small spikes 2-3 inches and skinny like pencils. They had the typical fawn caricaturist such as short snout and short stubby body. And if I remember correctly I believe that the last one I saw still had a faint indication of the spot pattern as I noticed him directly under my tree stand. Is this possible? Only twice over the years have I believe I witnessed this.

I do have a program entitled "The Wacky World of Whitetails " that includes many different antler anomalies, including antlers growing out of cheeks, small antlers near the eyes and multiple small antlers in really odd locations . In one bizarre instance, the antlers are reversed and actually curl around the jawbones like a hockey mask.

Odd racks like you're talking about are often the result of an injury to the hind quarters, referred to as " the Contra/Lateral effect". (Contra meaning "side"; lateral meaning "opposite")
If the buck sustains an injury in the hind quarters (car collision or an injury from a fall) the antler growth on the opposite side of the body can be effected.
I shot what I thought was an 8 point buck back in the 1980's, and as I rolled it over to what I thought was an 8 point rack, the antler on the other side turned out to be a single, strait antler, about 18 inches in length.
Upon examination, the deer had suffered an obvious injury to the hind quarters, probably clipped by a car. The nerves in hind quarters travel forward to the front quarters, and cross over to the other side of the body as the nerve reaches the front of the deer.
Injury to the hind quarters usually results in a de-formed antler on the front opposite side of the body.
A similar type injury that occurs to the front of the body will usually result in the anomaly being on the same side.

Wow thanks DHenry, such interesting info you provide us with. To piggyback off that info, Here's a picture of a buck we had on camera in the summer. It appeared he had what looked like a hand growing as his left side antler. He wasnt spotted during bow but my buddy harvested what he thought was an 8pt. Turns out it was this guy but he had lost his freaky side. When my buddy skinned him out he found he had a healed over broken right hind leg, broken eye socket and cracked skull. Extremely tough creatures we chase. Thanks for the info again Mr. Henry!

This deer is 5 1/2 years old; the center white enamel is still complete from front to back on the first molar.
At 6 1/2 the center white enamel is incomplete on the first molar.

It was a buck. My buddy came across a buck carcass in late December with only his left antler. He kept the antler but didn't see another one. Yesterday a few friends and myself were looking for sheds in the same general area and I came across the Bucks right side. 30yds away was the carcass of a buck without antlers. Almost certain it was same one. Antlers matched.

A friend of mine saw a guy walking his property with a rifle during the season and confronted the person. He shot a buck and it ran up the mountain so my 2 buddies went with this guy to see if they could locate the wounded buck. No such luck. The guy said buck looked old and grey. The deer headed right for where we found the antlers and carcass. Its a shame that this guys long journey came to an end like that.

It's somewhat hard to see this one because of the top down view. Ideally the picture of the jaw should be a side view, not the straight down.
That said, from what I can see from the top down view, it looks like it could be as much as 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 year old deer.
If you have some time, resend me the side view of this jaw and I'll confirm it for you.

Ice Time...this is an old deer for our area.
It is missing the first molars on both sides of the lower jaw, and shows considerable wear and dentine (the brown stuff).
Based on your pictures I'd age this one to be at least 6 1/2 years old.
Hold on to the jawbone. Ron does the scoring and I do the aging. We've talked about getting together after the season.

Your deer has all the characteristics of a 3 1/2 year old deer.
Wear on the enamel of the first molar (fourth tooth from the front of the mouth) pretty much gives it away. The first three premolars are worn as expected. and the first molar is just beginning to show minimal wear.

The buck I shot with xbow a week before rifle also had no fat on it at all...... it was kinda weird butchering but also nice I didn't have to trim fat off.

The first buck you have is a solid 2 1/2, with very little wear on the last molar at the back of the tooth row.
The second could possibly be a 3 1/2, but i cant see enough wear on the last tooth at the back of the jaw to confirm it.
Either way you've got some nice deer this season. Congratulations on both !!
Belly dragging snow can cause them to use up a significant amount of their body fat reserves; hopefully we wont see deer belly dragging in the snow.
If you have a chance, save the lower jaw bone from the second deer, and bring it to one of my deer aging classes next fall. I'll start teaching it again in September.

I agree Ron, i think that Dick was refering to brown clowns and missed Deans buck so I'll take a stab at it. Dean I believe that your buck is 3 1/2 from what I can tell. I'm hoping that Dick can confirm it for you, but It has wear consistent with a 3 1/2. Great buck congrats!
On another note, if Dick does another deer aging class I highly recommend you attend, (that goes for all members here). DHenry is the master biologist, he is a wealth of knowledge and his classes are fun and informative. We are really lucky to have Dick here on HVS.

I would concur that your deer is a six and a half year old. The lower jaw line is pretty well worn down, with considerable wear. At 7 and 1/half it would show even more wear on the jaw line.
Accuracy will decline as they get older. Congratulations on a nice buck !

The rear points only show a little wear, with minimal dentine showing.

Guys, you can use a chart like this to age a deer yourself, and come very close. At the very least you'll know the difference between a 2 1/2 year old and a fully mature deer It's very easy once you know what to look for.

That's a tough one Ron. It has some abnormal wear, and the picture doesn't show the back molar with that flap of cheek skin,lol. If you can, take another picture, a little more of a side view including the rear molars.
And definitely save that jaw, I will stop by to get a better look at it.

Hi J Mack, I think your deer is 3.5, the first molar looks like it is caked with blood so it is hard for me to see, But from what i am seeing i believe 3.5

Get a better angle looking down on the jaw. Not straight down. Need to see the dentine line on the first molar. From your current picture it appears 2 1/2. Not ruling out 3 1/2 until you can get a better picture.

Looks like 3.5 Muskrat. The second pic is a little better, I can see the dentine on the first molar is slightly oblong, indicating 3.5 years old. What a slammer for 3.5! Awesome buck!

If i get the details on his condition ill pass them on here. I ask to keep Dick and his family in your prayers. Thanks. he is under the 2020 gun harvest thread, but i am sure that Ron will agree the pics do not do the deer justice he is massive, i sent the original pic right after i got to where my father harvested him, to Ron, saying pic don't due justice, he replied no that's a beast, then last night Ron's text was, I hate to say it but your father may have you beat, LOL,
if so it is what it is but two Catskill mtn bucks, in the 140's is straight up an amazing feat.

Yes I saw it after I commented, you and Dad did great, dream season for sure! I’ve shot some nice bucks that I am really proud of, but I’m still looking for the buck of my lifetime, you and Dad both got what I would consider bucks of my life time, congratulations guys!!!

That’s sweet! Did the other side of the jawbone show as much wear? And do you have a picture showing a little more of a top down shot, just a angle that shows top and side view. It’s definitely a trophy killing such a old deer on state land with a bow late in the regular season, congrats!!!

Update, buddy sent teeth out to deerage.com and they came up with 6.5 y/o. Older than 5.5, think gets a lot tougher to age, because I’ve definitely seen 6.5 y/o with more warn teeth

yes it does, 1.5 2.5 and 3.5 are pretty clear, they are tough at 5.5 and up, especially with just a picture. If you remember, Dick always used to say “save that jaw I’d like to get a better look at it “ I sure miss having his expertise here.

Yes, the pic is a little blurry. I think a better pic from directly of the side of the jaw would be easier to tell.

Those look good an sharp. I shot a deer a few years ago that has no molars. They were flattened. The fur had a yellow tint to it we called him the school bus. He was an 8 pointer with pencil thin rack. We took it to a butcher an he estimated 7-8 years old. I ordered to make a rug out of the fur since it was so unique and it magically disappeared. I got an apology an some other bucks rug.

I have the chart DXT and took Dicks course, but this on had me confused??? the one side looks like he is 7.5 and the other side looks like 2.5. The top jaw on the deformed side has teeth worn right down. Strange. I will try to post better pics tonight. If I tell this guy his deer is only a 2.5 he will be let down lol. I am sticking with 3.5 lol. Thank guys.
