Title: Snowshoe hares
Post by: gdk45 on June 07, 2022, 08:11:42 AM
Was hiking with the wife and our dog on the Ashokan rail trail yesterday.  Dog was very interested in a scent on the trail so we started looking into the woods and saw three large rabbits chasing which were much too large to be cottontails.  Looked like a hot doe and two bucks chasing.  Are there snowshoes around the reservoir?

Wouldn't be surprised. Hunted them year back in Liberty.

There is another rabbit that we used to see sometimes ...
We always called them woods rabbits ...they are a brown rabbit about twice the size of a cottontail ..
But not a snowshoe hare ...

Years ago there were a reported few , European hares as well , I always heard of some on the east side of Hudson River ...around dutchess county area ..but never saw one ..

The few snowshoe hares I have seen in the Catskills have all been above 3500' in elevation. It's certainly possible they are lower down as well.
