Best place for handgun Ammo.
« on: October 02, 2019, 03:19:02 PM »
Been buying my handgun Ammo at Walmart for years now. 9mm and 45acp. The deals were hard to beat. Just wondering where you guys are getting range ammo either online or Ulster County local? I'm cheap and shoot my 1911s alot but don't feed my guns steel. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Since the Safe Act was passed, all ammo sales are supposed to be FTF.  There may be some companies still shipping to NY but it's not legal.  At some point, you are supposed to pass a background check before buying ammo.

This is factually incorrect. While the SAFE Act originally forbade the online sale of ammunition without going through an FFL, this was amended shortly thereafter. Unfortunately for NY residents most companies never bothered to revise their NY online ammo sale requirements. This is why Cabela's/Bass Pro and many other companies will not ship ammo to NY. Thankfully there are several businesses that understand the updated regulations. Buds and Target Sports USA are two of the main sellers.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the changed law. It's bothersome that so many still think that ammo cannot be legally purchased online in NY without going through an FFL. https://www.targetsportsusa.com/ny-safe-act-online-ammo-sales-p-58633.aspx

Your link is not the official state website and I can't get to page 2.  The official NY Safe Act page says individual  ammo sales need to be FTF.  Some online vendors are shipping to NYS residents.

Fake news.

The Amendment went through in July of 2015. Here we are several years later and still folks believe that ammunition cannot be purchased online and legally delivered to your door in NY. Yes, it can.  We have few enough gun rights in NY. Be thankful that at least we are still able to purchase ammunition online.

This is taken from your first link:
"SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo has agreed to suspend plans for background checks for ammunition sales in New York and allow internet sales of ammunition, changing part of the NY Safe Act, according to state Sen. James Seward."
and further down in the same article:
"No provision of the SAFE Act -including the ban on Internet ammunition sales -- has been rolled back or altered due to this memorandum," Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said. "This simply acknowledges what has been said previously -- the ammunition sales database will not be prematurely introduced until the technology is ready and it does not create an undue burden for business owners. "

So, who do we believe??

I just called the SAFE ACT info line.  Online sales to individuals addresses are still not legal.  You can get a tax ID # and register as an ammunition seller and have it delivered to your door however.

Not fake news.

I still strongly disagree. The wording of the SAFE Act Amendment is such that until the ammo background check system is in place, the face to face FFL ammunition sales law does not take effect. Since the ammunition background check has been (hopefully) long-term shelved, that means there is no law against online ammunition sales.

There is a good discussion regarding this, along with the actual text of the SAFE Act explained at https://www.longislandfirearms.com/forum/topic/173370-will-we-be-allowed-to-order-ammo-online-again-without-using-s-ffl/page-1 Another reasonable discussion is at https://nyfirearms.com/forums/laws-politics-firearms-self-defense-weapons/150906-online-ammo-purchase-legality.html The unanimous consensus is that online ammunition sales are legal in NY. Major companies such as Buds and Target Sports USA have had their legal teams look into it. They would not risk their multi-million dollar companies over shipping ammunition illegally to NY.

I will continue to order my ammunition online, and with no problems. I encourage you to do the same. It's a great way to get hard-to-find rounds, good prices, quick shipping, and avoid the hassle of going store to store hoping they have what you want in stock. It's our legal right, let's hope it doesn't go away.
