took my buddies son out for his first time ever for himself.
Got to the spot about 5:05 am, walked to around where I had roosted the birds last night, or so I thought, but I was wrong.
The birds were still half way up the mtn and on private land, Unfortunately the kids father could not attend due to a recent injury, but i advised that after a few days of study I felt the birds would naturally come down our way. They gobbled off-and-on for approx. 30 min, only answering my calls twice. But again I advised that's a good thing they know we are here. After the birds left the roost, I called and called for another 20 min not an answer. but after a lil home work, I had an idea we were in the right place. Around 6:15 I started to putt instead of yelp and bang on the ridge above us about 300 yards out, the hill lit up.
I whispered, they are coming. Not even a min went by and i see four birds running down the bank above us, then they hit a ledge and veered off to our left to take the easy way to us, at this time I said to my self, awe man they all jakes. Then I see two birds fly off the ledge, and head for the batch of jakes cutting them off from my decoys about 50 yards out.
The two toms ran those jakes all over the flat we were on ranging from like 30-50 yards away, when another Jake flew down off the cliff and V lined straight at the decoys. The larger of the two toms noticed this and turned and came strutting to with in 20 yards at which time i said, take the bird in the middle that's fanned out, and Bang dropped him in his tracks, only flopped once.

Once again my @walkabout calll proved to much for this joker. He came in running with 4 other Toms to the decoys. Some real light purring has been magic for me the last 2 seasons. Thanks again Ron!
1” spurs and 9.5” beard. Some cool video too but I haven’t uploaded it yet to YouTube. Joker did a back flip when I shot him!
-
Great bird single pin! Congrats!
-
Congrats and yes Ron’s slate calls are spot on for sure
-
Congrats to all ..... managed to get this one this morning. Didn't hear anything until I started blind calling around 0845 then made it a point not to overcall. I didn't hear anything after 45 minutes then saw a Tom coming in silently from behind me heading straight for the decoys. This year I made it a point to face the decoys towards my blind after watching endless hours of turkey hunting and someone suggested by doing that they will put themselves in between you and the decoys and it worked. Crazy Antler Taxidermy's custom made slate call and the WICKED RIDGE XBOW using NAPs FOC broadhead also worked ..... heres the video https://youtu.be/DnbP9N51iZQ ... good luck
-
Great video Grazan , congratulations on a nice bird ... (beers)

Walkabout .... Turkeys like to hear your calls too ..... speaking from experience even the bad callers manage to fool a TOM w/ your call ......
-
best of luck this weekend guys,
dad got out yesterday and connected, and i took a buddy out this am that connected with this big boy, was an amazing hunt, i can not attribute this one to my calling well, i did call a hen in who proceeded to beat the living crap out of my decoy. I mean came running in jumped up kicked it twice, started to wing flap it and had the decoy lean over, but still stuck in the ground so each time she pecked at the eyes and pushed to the ground it would spring back up like a punching bag. The whole time she was putting and purring which managed to draw this guy in to about 30 yards and no farther LOL
-
Another great Tom, killer. Congrats!
-
nice birds all--good bull

Nice bird Jim boy!
-
Congrats Jimboy
Was able to get out this am took my buddies wife, first spot we went heard birds a mile off and the wind was just to much up high on the mtn
So moved set up and instantly had birds talking but paying no attention going other way, luckily we pulled a hen in who stayed with us for about 45 min and then she wondered off down the hill and yelping whole way
Which turned this guy and his brother around and they came in hot about five min and three light calls on a crazy antler slate and bang, first bird to one of Ron's calls this season, for myself, but once bird was in range to hear it they were on us in no time
Hunters personal best
10" beard
1" spurs

been a tough year for me, some close calls a miss but I'll give it another try this weekend. You suck Jim. lol ;D
-
Luckily today she did not miss, went to a few public lands first light heard one gobble way off but not interested in us, so we went and tried a private pc in shokan worked a bird for an hr or so but he was more interested in his hen than us, so went and tried a different spot I had seen some birds by and instantly talked to at least three Tom's in distance so we ran in woods and got set up, first call those birds answered again and a hen still way out, I look over and am like bird silent 25 yards she said what I said get ready u will see him in a second
And then he stepped out of the swamp at like 15
Yards
9" beard
.75" spurs
She is tagged out
