Im getting ready to shoot a few. In my opinion the worm issue is an old tale. Worms are usually intestinal and not affected by temperature. I think it might have started from the botfly that small game can have at times, especially in the south.

Was jack eating the rabbits?
When we got a snowshoe, we would gut it right away , usually the dogs showed up and wanted some ..... I always hung the intestines up in a tree , but fed the heart to the dog as a treat ..

We had one beagle , if you didn't get to the rabbit first , he would take it away and eat the head off ..
My dogs would get worms occasionally, but I never associated it with them mouthing the dead rabbits..

Used to be some big old grey squirrels around , now I see mostly smaller ones ..
Gotta get after them soon ..

Tree Rats 8). Apple thieves!
The only squirrels in trouble at my place are the Red little @#%^ bas%$@ds that love to nest in my barns.  They get the 10-4 20 16 or 12-- what ever is at hand.  Its the only squirrel that i will never shoot a 22 at because i don't want to miss. (hunt)

The red devil has found a way into my house under my back deck (owning a +100 year home has it's problems) because the barn is not good enough. He is now about to experience how a have-a-heart works or my 10-4. #what ever comes first!  (hunt)

Ill tell ya them Damm flying squirrel 🐿 are a pain in the butt also, they would Glide down on to my roof at 2-4 am and the proceed to have a square dance, lol. Then they would chew on the cedar shakes outside my bedroom trying to get in, thankfully I haven’t had em in several years, but there was a point when there was a pile of them. Aka tiny Gray devil, lol

2 red devils down to the 10-4 (hunt)

The last one was in pursuit of a gray that was looking for a black walnut for breakfast.  Gray's get a free pass in my farmyard most days although they eat a pile of apples before the oaks drop.  Once reds have a territory they don't want a single gray even passing by.  One more job to the Fall list--patch up holes in the old barn and clean up the 5 gallon size nest the red devils made out of leaves in the woodshop.

10/4 on the 410 treatment to those Red Devils ...

My grandfather told me that those red squirrels would chase a grey squirrel and bite him in the gonads....I don't know if that's true , but when your 8 years old and your grandpa tells you that ..
You  kinda don't forget something like that :-)

That seems to be the end that they are always chasing ;D, it could also explain 2 things on my place:

1-Why some grays are so darn big like an ox
2-Why they run so fast to avoid the red Devil

I have heard the same urban tail about them trying to get the leg up on the world by castration of their competition in the neighborhood.  Any one else that has heard about this--what would you call a squirrel biologist--any of those want to chime in?
