Bucks in velvet in December?
« on: December 05, 2021, 05:18:43 PM »
Curious of input before I google..
My buddies son today harvested a real nice 8 point buck still in velvet that was chasing two does. I was curious if anyone else here has harvested a buck this late in season in full velvet, just how often this may happen?
It looks as if it has never rubbed even the smallest pc off it's antlers or had any tussles with any other bucks! From the pictures I was sent it looks flawless. Being 50 years young, I personally have never witnessed it in my 30 something years of hunting. I will try and get permission to post it if I can figure out how to do so.

I saw a few others this year that other hunters had pics of with velvet, both harvested and on trail cams. Much more than usual, I was wondering if it had anything to do with the EHD? Strange for sure!

lol checked him out.. for sure  is not a female ..they tore the hide all up dragging it up the mountain almost a mile.. hopefully the taxidermist can work with it. Also for only being shot once, the entire side was jelly like it had been shot more than once. Maybe happened while dragging and yanking on it's arms? Never seen such damage from a drag if that's what it's from?
would love to post a pic if anyone can tell me how to resize the file ?

Wow that’s beautiful, and very rare, velvet antlers with a long hair cape. The velvet appears to be in great condition. Awesome, congratulations!!!

Very cool!
I think that if that one, and a nice 10 or 12 pointer were walking around together, I'd go for the velvet.  Really nice, hope he's getting that one mounted.
Thanks for posting the pic!
