Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) Update
« on: November 23, 2021, 01:43:04 PM »
The DEC newsletter from today has a couple paragraphs on the latest EHD info, and some interesting photos that can help ID deer that have been exposed but did not die from the disease.

thank you for sharing the update.

Once I experienced first hand the obvious lack of deer in the section of 3m I hunt, I emailed wildliferegs@dec.ny.gov to voice my concerns.  Not sure if it helps but figured the more vocal people about it the better. They did respond with "(we) will adapt our management plans as necessary to address any population reductions that are not in alignment with our goals."

The key word in the response is "goals". I know nothing DEC can do to stop the EHD itself but I am realizing they wanted a fraction of the deer in 3m suburbia already, that must explain their apathy.

Yep, they say that’s a side effect of a deer that survived EHD, nice buck but I wouldn’t eat it.

They say if the deer shows signs of the sickness to contact the conservation department. I’m pretty sure that I read somewhere that they believe the meat is safe to eat as long as it smells good and looks good, I guess I shouldn’t have made that statement without seeing the actual deer.

That is a sign of possible EHD immunity. The state would be interested in tissue samples from that deer. Contact them.

No matter what the science says, I agree with DXT. I wouldn't eat any animal that shows signs of EHD or any disease.
Great Buck none the less!
