I figured they were dead. Watched them all spring and summer and then nothing. That started about 3 weeks ago. Sad to see. With all the vultures, ravens and eagles they dont last long there.

Just heard from my uncle in Ruby... He found two dead deer in the swampy area behind his house. He could smell them from the house and went to investigate...

I just heard about someone who said they found 5 dead along a small creek not far from one of my hunting spots. Sucks.

The sick doe that was at my house yesterday came back again today, she's been in my back yard since noon today and is still here. The fawn comes and goes. I guess she is dying a slow death it's so sad to see this.

Doreen , it is hard to understand just how cruel mother nature seems at times ..
It's sad to watch it unfold , seems so senseless..
Thanks for sharing..

What I don't understand is - we always had " no-see-um " bugs ..
But they never killed our deer ..
What has changed ?

Good question Bob. And we were told last year by DEC that it was bad due to the dry conditions. This has been one of the wettest summers we've had in a long time so......??
Fortunately I haven't come across any in north Town of Newburgh this year. It's also hard to come across any sign either after the EHD devastation we had here last year. I did find a probably 8-9 year old buck dead along a creek in my Illinois spot last week. I'm hoping he died of old age and not EHD. Buzzards were on him pretty good

DEC explained it like this :
Last year the infected no-see-ums , where carried up here on hurricane winds from the southern states ... it affected orange /Putnam county's the hardest ...   The hope was that those bugs would get killed off during last years winter -- it didn't happen !!

Now the  infected insects are here in ulster county and spreading this deadly virus ..

If you find dead deer , the dec urges you to call and report ..they send all data to Albany to formulate some sort of plan ..  845-256-3000  DEC newpaltz ...
