Recent Die-off of Menhaden in lower Estuary and NY Bight (Mid - Late December)

Does anyone have any insight as to the reason for the recent die-off of menhaden experienced in the lower part of the Hudson and NY Bight toward the end of December???  . . . .some witnessed hundreds along the shore.

ive heard they could die if they swim into cold water..

Ziffystriperchum:
In Jersey, they seem to think it's caused by warmer water from climate change and more rain causing sewerage to overflow and run into the water causing algae blooms . . .depleating oxygen in the water.
