I have both a .223 and 22-250.  I prefer my .223.  Wider selecrion of ammo, cheaper factory ammo, and more than enough for the distances I shoot.  I’d opt for the .223 over .222 myself.   However, if speed and flat trajectory are whay you want, I’d go .220 swift if you handload, 22-250 if you intend to shoot factory ammo.  Really hard to beat the .223 around here though.

Hey Gut Shot - thanks for the MidwayUSA ammo tip, I'll check that out!  Greensider - I got the actual Ruger bolt action rifle (I forget the model number) - regular walnut stock, etc.  Nice rifle and just a pleasure to shot.

Gut Shot - So I went to the MidwayUSA site and sure enough, they had one box of Nosler Ballistic Tip .222 Rem Mag ($84) I tried to order, but they won't ship to a NY resident, you have to be an FFL holder (Fed. Firearms Lic.) so I guess I'll have to order it through a local gun dealer??  Good try though, thanks for the tip.

Back in the 70s a varmint rifle chambered in 223 was unheard of.  222 is what was used for chucks, yotes.  I even had a friend who had a Savage single shot over under 222 on top with a 12 ga underneath which was used for turkey back in the day. 223 kinda push the classic 222 to the wayside.

I got the Ruger bolt action - in Ruger .204 (sorry I can't think of the model number right now) - typical wood stock, checkered, might be model 77 I forget.  It's just a pleasure to shoot and a wonderful round.
